Take Your Dog to School
We don't expect kids to learn without being taught, so how can we expect dogs to? Here are some tips for choosing a humane obedience class instructor:
- Verify a trainer's references and credentials before you enroll in a program. Check with the Chamber of Commerce and look for members of the American Dog Trainers Network or the Association of Pet Dog Trainers.
- Observe the trainer at work with other dogs in obedience classes or private sessions. If you see any methods you don't feel comfortable with, look elsewhere.
- Don't let a trainer force you to use a "choke" collar or train your dog to heel by yanking on his or her neck. This technique can cause serious neck injuries. Click here for information on safer alternatives.
- Don't send your dog away to school. Obedience classes teach YOU as much as they teach your dog, so you shouldn't play hooky!
