General Issues
We owe it to our animal companions to make their lives as comfortable and fulfilling as possible. Providing them with wholesome food, regular veterinary care, and exercise is only the start when it comes to animal care. Dogs can’t fill their water bowls, cats can’t clean their litter boxes, and fish can only swim in the water you give them. A portion of your daily routine should be set aside so that you can ensure that you are providing all the time and attention that your animal needs. Being with you, playing games, and participating in the household as a member of the family are necessary for an animal’s mental and emotional health. Remember, for your dog, cat, bird, or fish—you control the universe. It’s up to you to make it a paradise! A long walk in the park will be the highlight of your dog’s day, so make sure it is quality time, and don’t rush Fido when he wants to stop and smell the fire hydrant or say hello to a canine neighbor. Letting parakeets and other birds fly freely in a protected room or screened-in porch will make their hearts and bodies soar. Daily brushing and play sessions are ideal ways to make a cat purr. Never underestimate the value of setting aside time devoted entirely to your animal friend.
For most of us, life is a complicated routine of work, obligations, and scheduling. Don’t let your animal companion suffer because of bad planning. Allowing plenty of time for belly rubs, ear scratches, and games is vital. The payoff—for both you and your friend—is priceless.
